Want to get bait without having to pay for it?
Two words my friend: Cast net
Cast nets are a recreational fisherman’s best friend when it comes to catching bait. It is a circular net with a weighted bottom that you can throw over a school of fish and then pull them in with the hand line. Simple concept, but it can be a bit tricky at first.
There is not a One Size Fits All cast net and of course there are many ways to throw a cast net. Today we’ll be focusing on the different factors to look into when purchasing a cast net.
- Mesh Size
- Material
- Weight of the Net
- Size of the Net When Fully Opened
- State Regulations on Cast Net Sizing
Cast nets come in different sizes. They can range anywhere between 3 feet up to a 14-foot commercial net (size limit in Florida). Mesh size and weight influence the sink rate of your net and the size of the bait you can catch. You want to try to get a mesh size that doesn’t allow your bait to escape. At the same time, mesh that is too small can damage and gill the bait you are aiming to catch. It’s a fine balance.
Material-wise, monofilament is the way to go. Unlike nylon nets, cast nets made from monofilament don’t absorb water which makes your net heavier, and they are clear in color.
